How do our days shift and change, how might our life unfold more consciously, when we routinely tune in with the stirrings of the soul?
Earlier this year, I began offering a writing circle of a different style than I’ve offered before. Write Yourself Home is an opportunity to gather in community to write daily using a prompt I offer, or not. Devote the time to a formal project, or not. Draw, or sit, or sing, or stare off into space, or not. Show up live with the group every day, or not.
This might all seem a little loose at first glance, all of these “or nots”. Though what the members of the circle and I have noticed and have come to deeply appreciate is that this format provides just enough structure to be inviting and to not be restrictive. Simultaneously, this format provides more than enough support to hold us however we arrive from day to day — eager, resistant, exhausted, present, committed, distracted — fostering deeper self-exploration, compassion, and grace.
It’s the practice of it, the willingness to simply be where we are for this period of time each morning — or not — that returns us home to ourselves. Yes, the delving into the creative process through a regular writing practice grants us access to ourselves in a deeper way than life without it. And, as we become more attuned to our inner movements, to the thoughts, beliefs and patterns that are running our lives unseen and unchecked in the background, we gain more clarity about what we value, what’s most important, and what we want to be focusing on instead. More than that, we get precious glimpses of how to get there.
To live a life of connection with the wisdom and guidance of our inner knowing/higher self, we need to trust that exploring the inner landscape is a necessity, and easily within our reach. We need to see it as important and choose it. We need not become monks and seclude ourselves, though we do need to create the space in our lives to be curious about who lives in here and getting to know them better.
This fundamental premise is a basis of my work. Write Yourself Home is an opportunity to use the creative process as a doorway to connect in, to reacquaint with ourselves in a new way, and to discover a safe place to land both in the soft center of ourselves, and also in this sweet, generous community.
If this feels like a response to the call of something deep within you that is seeking acknowledgement and expression, I hope you’ll check it out. We start this Thursday, September 21st on the cusp of a whole new cycle as the Autumn Equinox ushers us into the inward movement of fall. xo
